An experience report from our dual student Nico

My name is Nico, I'm 21 years old and currently in the 5th semester of my bachelors degree in Business Administration and Service Management at Müller - Die lila Logistik. You hear a lot about dual studies - working during the weekend, no time for hobbies, tough lectures and quite a lot of stress. But what is actually true?

I would do the exact same thing again

The combination of theory and practice - that's how it all started and has been really important to me. Full lecture halls and boring topics were never desireable for me and I am pretty sure about that. So I've decided to do dual studies, especially with a focus on business administration in a larger company. High hope? Maybe! However, I would walk this way again. Müller - Die lila Logistik has always given me the feeling that - next to my exam results - especially my personality is the one thing that matters the most.

No traditional and boring lecturers

Every three months you'll get to change from college to work and back to college for 6 semesters at the Cooperative State University of Baden-Württemberg until you'll graduate your Bachelor of Arts. Especially the theory phases are pretty similar to going to high school, considering the small class sizes of 20 - 30 students and the interactive lectures. The school want everybody to participate but there's no such thing as oral grades or so. The various topics and disciplines of business administration shape the core of the program and are being supplemented by two compulsory modules out of Logistics, Consulting and International Management. I chose Logistics and International Management. What I love the most is how much we get to profit off of the experience of the different lecturers that we have in class and to also find the things I learn in my job.

Only the quantitative classes like math and statistics - that actually seem a little bit more complicated - were actually very work intense for me but I also just in general don't love math that much. The exams take place at the end of every semester within two weeks and it's usually 4 - 5 of them. So it's important to start studying for them when it's not too late so that at the end of the semester you don't have so much stress. Furthermore, when normal students have their summer break and go on vacation, I go back to work but I think that's great. Immediately after the theory phase, the practice phase at Müller - Die lila Logistik begins and I get to apply my newly gained knowledge on some real world questions.

At Müller - Die lila Logistik a lot of things are required but you'll also perceive at least as much support, too.

During my practice phases, I've worked in so many different departments: Transportation, process management, HR, Lila Consult, marketing and also sales. The different tasks and topics really made my studies as exciting and interesting as they were. From logistics projects at Lila Consult to investigating potentials in processes at the Lila process management, I've always been challenged and supported. In every department, there's a mentor assigned to all dual students, apprentices and trainees that helps you to quickly understand everything you'll need to know. Before starting my job at Müller - Die lila Logistik, I didn't know how differentiated logistics can be.

Especially my time in the sales department will remind me of how great dual studies are, because this department is responsible for aquiring the future customers and projects that'll keep the company running.

Dual studies - Career opportunity or spare time killer?

The time passes by super fast and I'm already looking back on two very interesting and funny but also challenging years. Dual studies, no doubt, are quite tough sometimes but you'll also gain so many more and new things. However, I've never had to work during the weekends and I still have time to pursue all of my hobbies - so with some discipline, my dual studies never were an issue for me and I encourage everybody not to think that either. It's also just normal for life to have ups and downs, that's not a secret.

You wanted an answer to the question whether dual studies are a spare time killer or a career opportunity: I hope I could give you a good answer and I definitely view it as a career chance and changer!
