Monitoring and continuously improving warehouse processes is a major challenge in the logistics industry. To address this, MÜLLER | DIE LILA LOGISTIK—a logistics service provider operating both nationally and internationally—utilizes process mining technology, among other tools.
In process mining, a process is reconstructed based on its digital footprints, which are extracted from the relevant source systems. The result is deep insight into the underlying process—exactly as it actually unfolds. Hardly any other technology can create this level of transparency.
At MÜLLER | DIE LILA LOGISTIK, process mining is already being used in day-to-day operations at various locations. The technology has been implemented in some existing workflows and has also been utilized from the very start in new projects. The technology offers a wide range of possibilities for analyzing processes and identifying opportunities for improvement. For example, on-site workflows are visualized using so-called “spaghetti diagrams,” which show the most common variations of the process. In addition, customizable KPI evaluations help minimize lead times or unwanted activities. The process mining tool itself can support this through configurable automations—for example, an email notification is sent as soon as a specific threshold is reached. It’s also possible to look back at past data at any time to see how implemented measures have impacted the process. Another exciting feature is the ability to define the target process and then compare it with the actual state.
Of course, in most cases, it is still people who implement the improvements in practice. But process mining is what makes inefficient workflows and bottlenecks visible in the first place. As a result, reviewing the various dashboards quickly becomes an essential part of process management.
It’s also worth taking a look at the future of process mining: New approaches allow different business processes to be linked by defining and tracking objects. And AI will also play an increasingly important role in process optimization.
